black and white pictures of (and 10 observations about) the 6 authors who i am reading books by at the moment

Observations:
  1. Half of them are wearing glasses.
  2. Three of them are British, two are American, one is Japanese
  3. Two of them are dead, four of them are not.
  4. All six of them are men.
  5. Only one of them committed ritual suicide by cutting open his belly after a failed coup attempt.
  6. Only one of them kidnapped a Thai child prostitute, bought her off her father and put her in a home and school.
  7. Both of the Americans won the National Book Award.
  8. Only one of them was badly beaten by an angry mob in Afghanistan, although another of them did go to Afghanistan when he finished college to try and volunteer with the Mujahideen in the war against the Russians.
  9. Two of them are journalists, one of them writes children's books and four of them write novels.
  10. I have met only one of them.

(robert fisk, yukio mishima, david mitchell, william gaddis, william t. vollmann, philip pullman)

  1. may i add an observation?: Vollmann looks snugly psychotic in that shot. like a nerd with a nuke up his sleeve. that's all.

  4. david mitchell, at the PIAF book festival last year.
he was nice and funny and warm and friendly.
i am currently reading his new book which will be out in may, and is called 'black swan green'. i've only just started but i get the impression that i'm not going to love it like i love the others.
i wish i had met mishima though.

  5. what do you think of the pullman novels - i assume the children's books you are refering to are part of His Dark Materials trilogy? i read the books in the past year but have yet to meet and discuss reactions with another person who has read them.

  7. I have only read Northern Lights so far and it is incredible and wonderful and I want everybody to read it. It has restored a lot of faith in certain things that I had indeed lost some faith in.
I look forward to reading the others.

And if I had a daemon, I think it would be a racoon.
